Which lessons or training do you need?

There are a number of different routes to getting on a bike or scooter, and training to go with it.

Explaining every combination can make it look pretty complicated, but in practise more than 95% of our riders fall in to one of three groups below...

You would like to ride on L plates?

If this is you, all you need to do is successfully complete a CBT course with us on either a scooter or geared bike.  After completing the course, you can ride any bike or scooter up to 125cc displaying L plates.

If you want to continue riding on L plates year after year, and many do, then you need to complete a CBT course every two years.

Minimum age is 17   Qualified to ride up to 125cc bike or scooter, 11kW power maximum, with L plates

You would like your A2 motorcycle licence?

If this is you, then first you need to complete a CBT with us, unless you’ve done one in the last two years.  After that, you book a theory test online (currently £23, see the link below) and then attend the test in person at your chosen venue. Then you come to back to us to start your training: you’ll need an average of 12 hours tuition with us to complete the two elements: Mod 1 - manoeuvre training; and Mod 2, riding on the road.

You take a test after completing your Mod 1 training, and your final test after completing the Mod 2 training: and that's it, you're qualified to ride.

Minimum age 19 (no upper limit)  Qualified to ride any bike or scooter up to 35kW in power, without L plates

Quick summary: CBT > Theory test > Mod 1 training > Mod 1 Test > Mod 2 Training > Mod 2 test

You would like your motorcycle full licence?

You too will need to complete a CBT course with us, unless you’ve done one in the last two years.

After that, you’ll also need a valid motorcycle theory test: you book a test online and attend the test in person at your chosen venue - see the link below.  You’ll then need an average of 12 hours tuition with us to complete the two elements: Mod 1 - manoeuvre training; and Mod 2, riding on the road.

You take your first test after completing your Mod 1 training, and your final test after completing the Mod 2 training.  The only real difference to the A2 training is you complete the course on a bike over 595cc producing at least 40kW.  In our case, that means a Honda NC750S

Minimum age is 24  Qualified to ride any motorcycle, of any capacity

Quick summary: CBT > Theory test > Mod 1 training > Mod 1 Test > Mod 2 Training > Mod 2 test

Recommended first A category bikes:  Honda CB650F or CBR650F; Honda NC750S or NC750X - or click here

4.  You want to ride an automatic bike over 125cc without L plates, but don’t want to learn to ride with manual gears

No problem. You can complete the steps as A licence above, but on a bike with an automatic gearbox.  You licence will be restricted to automatic bikes only.  You can do it with us, we have automatic gearbox A category bikes available - Honda NC750S and X with DCT gearboxes. There is no difference in the price of the training

5.  You’re 21 to 23 and want to trade up from your A2 licence early

No problem. You must have two years riding experience post A2 exam.  You only need to complete a Mod 2 test on A category bike.  A few hours of lessons should do it.

6.  You’re over 24 and want to trade up from your A2 licence

No problem.  If you passed your test more than two years ago, you only need to complete the Mod 2 test.  Less than two years experience? Still no problem, but you’ll need a valid theory test (or pass one again) before taking the Mod 2.

7.  Want to ride a 125cc without L plates.

No problem. You’ll need to pass a theory test and then complete the Mod 1 training and test, and Mod 2 training and test.  12 hours is typical.  You’ll need to pass an Mod 2 test after two years experience to get you on an A2 licence, and a Mod 2 test after another 2 years to gain your full, unrestricted A category licence. Potentially, that could put you on a full unrestricted licence at 21...
